4th Navel CS special arrived at Okinawa on Sunday June 17th, 1945. We can hear the big guns shooting only a short distance away.
The harbor and island look very calm and peaceful except towers of smoke spiraling upward to the heavens. It’s hard to realize this is a war going on with such a quite beautiful day. It almost seems like a lovely Sunday afternoon back home. It seems strange that people could kill and destroy each other when this is enough for everybody. We are 8000 miles from home and it seems only across the horizon. No one knows how much I would like to see my wife and baby this afternoon but I am on a mission to fight so they will always be safe.
God grant that we will never have to go through another war.
